University of Illinios LGBT Resource Center

Mission Statement and Purpose

The mission of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center is to foster an environment that is open, safe and inclusive for people of all sexualities and gender identities. The Center is a resource not only for the LGBT community but for the entire University community. It exists for anyone who is who is interested in learning about LGBT people, issues, and concerns. For the LGBT community, the Center provides support for full inclusion of everyone in the University — including those who experience discrimination or who need support as a member of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender campus community.

Why is the LGBT Resource Center needed?

The campus environment at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign mirrors the larger society in that it reflects and contains homophobic, biphobic, transphobic, and heterosexist attitudes and beliefs which are oppressive and devaluing of LGBT people. The LGBT Resource Center seeks to help in the efforts to address homophobia and transphobia on campus and to work to make the environment safe, affirming, and inclusive for all students, faculty, staff, and LGBT students, faculty, and staff in particular.

Support Services

The LGBT Resource Center provides a confidential forum for LGBT students, faculty, and staff to discuss the campus climate. The Resource Center works with campus units to increase awareness and affirmation of LGBT people and reduce discrimination and harassment based on gender identity and expression and sexual orientation. The Resource Center refers LGBT people to appropriate campus and community support services. In addition, it collaborates with faculty, staff, and students to develop programs to celebrate the LGBT presence on the campus by organizing and sponsoring events associated with LGBTQIA issues.

Northern Illinios University Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Ally Resources

Northern Illinois University has been home to a vibrant community of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender individuals and our allies since 1970, when our first queer student organization was founded on campus.

In the years since those first brave students stepped out into the open, many dedicated students, faculty, and staff have built on their legacy, moving NIU forward to become one of the most LGBT-friendly campuses in the nation, as recognized by NIU’s inclusion in The Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students.

Northern Illinios University Gender and Sexuality Resource Center

In alliance with the vision and mission of Northern Illinois University and the Division of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management, the Gender & Sexuality Resource Center acknowledges the historical impacts of women and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and/or queer identities. We are a home away from home for all persons, inclusive of sexual and gender identities, and all forms of masculinity and femininity.

The Gender & Sexuality Resource Center serves as a central location for resources and support where acceptance of intersectional identities is encouraged and celebrated. Through student leadership development, advocacy, campus and academic engagement, and professional development opportunities, we collaborate with community, state, and national partners, alumni and other stakeholders to challenge societal constructs of gender and sexuality norms and promote social justice.

Welcome to the Gender & Sexuality Resource Center! At the GSRC, we are a home away from home for all—inclusive of gender and sexual identities. We are committed in supporting students through their time at NIU. We aim to get you connected and stay engaged in academics and the support that is here for you.

Celebrating all identities and instersections therein, we support our Collaborative Community partners (Asian American Center, Center for Black Studies, Latino Resource Center, Off-Campus and Non-Traditional Student Services, and Career Services), and individuals with invisible identities, including undocumented persons, military, and those with disabilities, to name a few. We strive to help all students find the resources and support needed to complete their degree at NIU.

Further, we are proud to be one of just 100 campuses to achieve a 4.5 out 5 stars on the National Listing of LGBT-Friendly Colleges & Universities. This listing is updated annually, and honors our ongoing commitment to our students and to creating an inclusive community.

We are also a proud member of the Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals, an elite class: NIU's GSRC is one of the colleges and universities internationally whose services include a professionally-staffed campus resource center addressing needs related to sexual orientation and gender identity. Further, we are members of the National Women's Studies Association, an organization committed to promoting and supporting the production and dissemination of knowledge about women and gender through teaching, learning, research and service in academic and other settings. Engaging and supporting men at NIU is another one of our priorities--look for expanding opportunities in this area!

We hope our website will introduce you to our vibrant community and all that we have to offer. In addition to learning about us here and on social media, please visit us at 105 Normal Road. We'll be glad to see you!
