University of Iowa Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Queer Resource Center

LGBTRC offers a supportive environment where students interact with others and experience diversity while serving their community. In Spring 2005, The Executive Board of the UI Gay, Lesbian, Transgender & Allied Union (GLBTAU) met with University administration to discuss the possibility of securing a Center for the LGBT community. The LGBTRC opened its doors in Fall 2006 as a space to interact with other LGBT students and enhance student educational experience at the University of Iowa.

Equality Iowa

Equality Iowa wants to tell all of you that your past support of The CENTER has been greatly appreciated.

  • The CENTER has been the main project of Equality Iowa (EQIA) the past two years & four months.

EQIA reached its goal, of assisting the community with a LGBTQ community center. The CENTER had a solid base in a lending library of more than 3,000 items and a strong outreach to the Trans community. It was decided that it was time for The CENTER to move out from the EQIA umbrella and become an entity of its own.

As this change took place too late for the changes to be reflected in workplace giving of the Iowa Shares and United Way campaigns some of you may have donated to The CENTER. Any funds designated for The CENTER will be sent to the new center: Des Moines Pride Center.

The furnishings and materials that had been donated to EQIA for The CENTER have been given to the Des Moines Pride Center. This includes library materials, tables, chairs, desks and other items used at The CENTER. We hope that you will consider future donations to help position the Des Moines Pride center as a vital piece of the LGBT community.

This change will allow Equality Iowa to move forward on some of the projects that have been on the back burner. Some of these include:

  • Work on the Iowa Hate Crimes Law

  • Educate government agencies, commissions, and committees on changes needed in policies, procedures and code to make them more inclusive

  • Help start a SAGE (Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders) chapter in Iowa

Again, we thank you for your past support and hope that you will consider continued support of Equality Iowa as we move forward on these projects.

Diversity Focus LGBT Resources

Many organizations in our community support diversity. However, our communities will progress and grow more quickly if we work together to draw from the vast cultural experiences we have here, in eastern Iowa, and look to other areas of the country and world to expand our focus.

To spearhead this activity, Diversity Focus was proposed and then established in 2005 as a new entity to integrate and coordinate existing efforts as well as identify or create other activities and programs.

Diversity Focus Vision: Diversity is the crucial link to economic, cultural, academic, and technological success. Diversity Focus' vision is that the Corridor community be the model of inclusion that values, nurtures, attracts, and retains people of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs.

The mission of Diversity Focus is to lead in the promotion of diversity, cultural awareness and inclusion in our Corridor community.

The world is flat, as author Thomas Friedman says. Ideas and customs move across the world almost seamlessly now. At Diversity Focus, we welcome the challenge to highlight the diversity we have right here and use it to help the community grow and embrace the future.
