GLESN Kansas City Chapter

In 1990, a small, but dedicated group of teachers in Massachusetts came together to improve an education system that frequently allowed its lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students to be bullied, discriminated against and/or fall through the cracks.

Over 25 years later, that small group has grown into the leading national education organization focused on ensuring safe schools for all students. Today, we’re known as GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network.

We face a pervasive problem with a set of new challenges. 8 out of 10 LGBT students are still harassed at school each year because of who they are.

We are working to change that.

At GLSEN, we want every student, in every school, to be valued and treated with respect, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. We believe that all students deserve a safe and affirming school environment where they can learn and grow.

We accomplish our goals by working in hallways across the country -- from Congress and the Department of Education to schools and district offices in your community -- to improve school climate and champion LGBT issues in K-12 education.

  • We conduct extensive and original research to inform our evidence-based solutions for K-12 education.

  • We author developmentally appropriate resources for educators to use throughout their school community.

  • We partner with decision makers to ensure that comprehensive and inclusive safe schools policies are considered, passed and implemented.

  • We partner with dozens of national education organizations to leverage our shared expertise into creating great schools and better opportunities for every student.

  • We empower students to affect change by supporting student-led efforts to positively impact their own schools and local communities.

Every day GLSEN works to ensure that LGBT students are able to learn and grow in a school environment free from bullying and harassment. Join us as we transform our nation’s K-12 schools.

University of Missouri Kansas City LGBTQIA Programs & Services

Mission

The mission of LGBTQIA Programs and Services is to provide Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, and Ally  (LGBTQIA) students with the support, resources, and education needed to become a full member of the UMKC campus community and the communities where they live.

In conjunction with the mission of the Office of Student Involvement: The mission of the Office of Student Involvement is to be an open and welcoming space for all students and colleagues; to create a co-curricular experience that compliments the academic mission of the institution; to foster positive relationships with our campus and greater Kansas City communities; and to encourage innovation and best practices.

In support of this mission the LGBTQIA Programs & Services will help:

  • Create an environment in which better understanding of LGBTQIA issues can take place.

  • Facilitate student development through co-curricular experiences while affirming students’ identities and providing leadership opportunities.

  • Educate campus and our community on LGBTQIA issues of social justice.

  • Build collaboration where none has existed and continue to create new collaboration opportunities.

  • Provide training for students, faculty, staff and community members to create a greater Safe Space network.

  • Assist the University in achieving its retention goals by offering programming and services that promote student success.

  • Develop and sponsor programming that enhances the skills of students and assists in their development as students, scholars and professionals.

  • Serve as a resource for campus, the Greater Kansas City community and colleges and universities across the state of Missouri.

Resource Center History

In 1978, gay students at UMKC filed suit against the university for their right to assemble and become a recognized student organization on campus. In this landmark case, the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of the UMKC Gay Student Union. LGBT-friendly history has been progressing ever since.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Office was launched in July 2003 as the LGBT Initiative in order to establish a physical presence for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals at UMKC.

A break-through project of the UMKC Diversity in Action Plan (Project 6), the mission of the LGBT Office is to celebrate and honor the culture, history and accomplishments of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.

Today our programs have grown to be more inclusive adapting “Q-I-A” (Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, and Ally) in our name. While it may seem cumbersome at first, the addition of QIA will allow us to be more inclusive in achieving our mission. As part of the Office of Student Involvement, LGBTQIA Programs & Services continues to support our LGBTQIA students, faculty, and staff through LGBTQIA centered trainings, educational workshops and programs, resources in our Rainbow Lounge, and support of our LGBTQIA students.

The LGBTQIA Partnership Committee provides valuable guidance and direction to LGBTQIA Programs & Services.

UMKC is one of 190+ universities in the United States with a professionally staffed LGBTQIA programs or center.
