GLESN

In 1990, a small, but dedicated group of teachers in Massachusetts came together to improve an education system that frequently allowed its lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students to be bullied, discriminated against and/or fall through the cracks.

Over 25 years later, that small group has grown into the leading national education organization focused on ensuring safe schools for all students. Today, we’re known as GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network.

We face a pervasive problem with a set of new challenges. 8 out of 10 LGBT students are still harassed at school each year because of who they are.

We are working to change that.

At GLSEN, we want every student, in every school, to be valued and treated with respect, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. We believe that all students deserve a safe and affirming school environment where they can learn and grow.

We accomplish our goals by working in hallways across the country -- from Congress and the Department of Education to schools and district offices in your community -- to improve school climate and champion LGBT issues in K-12 education.

  • We conduct extensive and original research to inform our evidence-based solutions for K-12 education.

  • We author developmentally appropriate resources for educators to use throughout their school community.

  • We partner with decision makers to ensure that comprehensive and inclusive safe schools policies are considered, passed and implemented.

  • We partner with dozens of national education organizations to leverage our shared expertise into creating great schools and better opportunities for every student.

  • We empower students to affect change by supporting student-led efforts to positively impact their own schools and local communities.

Every day GLSEN works to ensure that LGBT students are able to learn and grow in a school environment free from bullying and harassment. Join us as we transform our nation’s K-12 schools.

The Center STL

CenterLink was founded in 1994 as a member-based coalition to support the development of strong, sustainable LGBT community centers.  The organization has played an important role in supporting the growth of LGBT centers across the country and addressing the challenges they face, by helping them to improve their organizational and service delivery capacity and increase access to public resources. Based in Fort Lauderdale, FL, CenterLink works with other national organizations to advance the rights of LGBT individuals and to provide LGBT community centers with information and analysis of key issues.

Serving over 200 LGBT community centers across the country in 46 states and the District of Columbia, as well as centers in Canada, Israel, Mexico, China and Peru, CenterLink assists newly forming community centers and helps strengthen existing LGBT centers, through networking opportunities for center leaders, peer-based technical assistance and training, and a variety of capacity building services. Our efforts are based on the belief that LGBT community centers are primary change agents in the national movement working toward the liberation and empowerment of LGBT people. Serving over 600,000 people, they are the heart and soul of the LGBT movement and are vital to our current well-being and dreams for the future.  Whether they provide direct services, educate the public or organize for social change, community centers work more closely with their LGBT constituency and engage more community leaders and decision-makers than any other LGBT network in the country.

Centers serve a vital and multi-faceted role in many communities across the country.  They are often the only staffed non-profit LGBT presence in the area and the first point of contact for people seeking information, coming out, accessing services or organizing for social change.  40% of LGBT centers provide direct health care and 10% of these centers exclusively serve LGBT communities of color, youth, seniors or women.  At the same time, half of the LGBT community centers have budgets under $50,000 and no full-time staff.

A fundamental goal of our mission is to help build the capacity of centers to meet the social, cultural, health and political advocacy needs of LGBT community members across the country.  CenterLink also acts as a voice for LGBT community centers in national grassroots organizing, coalition building and social activism in order to strengthen and build a unified center movement.

Lavender Women

Lavender Womyn is a National organization of lesbian social groups through the U.S.  Currently, we aren’t in any other countries, but would like to be someday.  Lavender Womyn was created for the purpose of helping lesbians find each other, and then giving them a safe place where they can gather together to have some fun and most of all, feel safe to be themselves.  Having lived in my city for over 25 years, I swore I was the only lesbian living here.  Lavender Womyn has changed that thought, and I now know I’m not alone.  What a great feeling!!  I grew up thinking that it wasn’t okay to be me, and that I was the only one who felt this way.  What a relief to find many others just like me to be able to bring everyone together to enjoy living as ourselves, and not having to “pretend” to be someone else.

Lavender Womyn events are intended mostly for lesbians, but we don’t exclude anyone who supports people being able to be who they are.  Although the majority of people at our events are lesbians, we’ve also had transgender’s, bi-sexuals, and heterosexuals attend as well.  Everyone is welcome who supports equality and diversity.  There is enough discrimination and judgment in this world.  We are about equality, openness, respect and loving people as people.
